Music education for young singers
The Schola Cantorum of Ss. Magnus & Bonosa was founded in 2016 to
help train the next generation of church musicians. Mindful of the
Second Vatican Council’s mandate that “much emphasis should be
placed on the teaching of sacred music,” and of the important role that
music plays in the cognitive, artistic and spiritual development of a
child, the Schola Cantorum choristers are trained in the techniques of
healthy singing, solfege, sight-reading, and rhythmic analysis. Students
will be educated in the music of the church, with a particular focus on
Gregorian Chant, and will learn about the importance of music in
worship.
The Schola rehearses from September-May, with a brief recess during
the Christmas holidays. The main branch of the Schola meets at Saint
Martin of Tours Catholic Church on Wednesdays at 4-5:30 PM. A
satellite branch of the Schola meets at Wesley Manor Retirement Home
on Tuesdays at 4-5:30 PM.
